Special Information for International Students
As a foreign student, you could find it difficult to make the most of the information at hand, either because it is in Danish, or because you might not be aware of the Danish welfare system, of rules if you are considering staying in Denmark after graduation, of the Danish job market, and of cultural norms in general. Take a look at the points below as they contain pieces of information that have been relevant to other international students. In this way, you do not miss out on important opportunities that are available to you.
Things you should know
- You are entitled to free Danish classes, offered by the Aalborg municipality. Find information at Aalborg Language School
- EU citizens and citizens from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland (EEA) can work in Denmark while studying. Non-EU and non EEA students are granted a permit to work up to 15 hours a week alongside their studies as well as full-time in June, July and August.
- You might want to look for internships in Denmark as part of your studies. This can be possible, according to your study requirements. The Careers Centre can assist by putting you in contact with a Danish company or organisation. Read more at the link "internship and project cooperation".
- You might consider to stay on and look for work in Denmark after graduation. Find out about rules for residence and work at Aalborg municipality, or online at Work in Danmark.
The Aalborg University International Office is another useful place to get information about your work permit or to stay after graduation.
As a general rule, if you complete a higher educational programme in Denmark, you can remain in the country for six months after you have finished your education/training in order to look for work, but you need to enquire about your personal circumstances.
- You might be entitled to receive unemployment benefit upon graduation, depending on your residence status, your country of origin and your employment history in Denmark.
You need to be aware of your chances before you graduate, as you will have to enrol to the municipality job centre no later than one month after you finish your education and at the same time enrol to an unemployment fund (A-Kasse) within 14 days of your last exam, or you will lose your right to receive the unemployment benefit.
This is a general rule, please read more under "unemployment benefit" at this site, contact a unemployment fund or a union, and the municipality Job Centre.
Please note that rules about working in Denmark and unemployment benefit can change. The information contained in this page is by no mean exhaustive and it is intended for general guidance only.
